Background of the Study

E-learning has revolutionized education globally, providing students with flexible and accessible learning opportunities. In the field of nursing education, the integration of e-learning is essential for enhancing knowledge acquisition, critical thinking, and practical skill development (Adebayo & Oke, 2024). The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the adoption of digital learning methods, compelling educational institutions to incorporate online platforms into their curricula (WHO, 2023). However, in developing countries like Nigeria, the adoption of e-learning among nursing students is still evolving, with varying levels of acceptance and effectiveness.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, one of Nigeria’s leading institutions, has introduced e-learning platforms to complement traditional teaching methods in nursing education. While online learning offers several benefits, including flexibility and access to a wider range of resources, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, lack of technical support, and students’ adaptability to virtual learning persist (Okon & Yusuf, 2023). Nursing education requires a balance between theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical training, raising concerns about the effectiveness of e-learning in skill acquisition.

Despite the increasing emphasis on digital learning, studies show that many nursing students still prefer face-to-face instruction due to the hands-on nature of their training (Obi & Adekunle, 2024). Additionally, factors such as students’ attitudes, institutional policies, and the availability of technological resources influence the adoption of e-learning. This study seeks to appraise the level of e-learning adoption among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, examining the benefits, challenges, and overall impact on their academic performance and skill development.

Statement of the Problem

The effectiveness of e-learning in nursing education remains a subject of debate, particularly in resource-limited settings. While e-learning platforms have been implemented at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the extent to which nursing students have adopted and benefited from them is unclear. Existing studies indicate that poor technological infrastructure, inadequate training on e-learning tools, and resistance to change hinder its effective implementation (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023).

Furthermore, nursing education requires hands-on clinical training, which is difficult to achieve through virtual learning alone. The gap between theoretical knowledge acquired through e-learning and the practical skills required in clinical settings raises concerns about the adequacy of online instruction in preparing nursing students for real-world practice (WHO, 2024). Additionally, limited research exists on how nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, perceive and utilize e-learning.

If e-learning adoption remains low or ineffective, nursing students may struggle to meet competency requirements, ultimately affecting healthcare delivery. This study, therefore, seeks to assess the level of e-learning adoption among nursing students, exploring the facilitators and barriers to its effective implementation.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of e-learning adoption among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

2. To examine the benefits and challenges of e-learning in nursing education.

3. To evaluate the impact of e-learning on students' academic performance and practical skill acquisition.

Research Questions

1. What is the extent of e-learning adoption among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria?

2. What are the benefits and challenges associated with e-learning in nursing education?

3. How does e-learning influence academic performance and practical skill acquisition in nursing students?

Research Hypotheses

1. E-learning adoption among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is significantly low.

2. The adoption of e-learning positively influences students' academic performance.

3. Challenges such as poor internet access and inadequate training hinder effective e-learning adoption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and their adoption of e-learning. It does not include other disciplines or universities. The study is limited to assessing students’ perceptions, benefits, and challenges associated with e-learning, without evaluating the perspectives of lecturers or administrators.

Definitions of Terms

• E-learning: The use of electronic technologies to access educational content outside a traditional classroom setting.

• Adoption: The acceptance and use of a particular technology or system.

• Practical skill acquisition: The process of developing hands-on nursing competencies through training and practice.
